Accelerate Site Performance While Controlling Infrastructure Costs
Whether they're interacting with a customer service Web site, a targeted marketing application, or a corporate intranet, site visitors won't tolerate slow site performance. To meet user demands, page delivery needs to be fast, even during periods of peak activity. This is true both for sites that are static as well those that are dynamic. While delivering tailored and targeted dynamic content often helps an organization meet its business goals, these capabilities shouldn't degrade site performance. Site visitors require pages that are delivered quickly regardless of their physical location or the dynamic nature of the content.

FatWire Satellite Serverâ„¢ dramatically speeds the composition and delivery of Web sites and content-centric applications. By using intelligent caching that handles both static and dynamic, personalized content, Satellite Server ensures delivery speed and infrastructure affordability.

With FatWire Satellite Server, you can:

Cache Personalized Pages
Caching makes frequently used content readily available so that it doesn't have to be dynamically generated. This improves performance. However, it makes little sense to cache a page that is personalized for an individual user or even a segment of users because the hit ratio would be extremely low. FatWire Satellite Server leverages the intelligent template structure of FatWire Content Server to break dynamic pages into "pagelet" components and store these in cache, ready for assembly and delivery of dynamic pages. The result is a site that no longer has to make a tradeoff between speed and personalization.

Assemble and Deliver Dynamic Pages
Satellite Server combines the pagelets it has cached, their expiration information, and new information drawn from Content Server to compose a page. Satellite Server then serves these pages to end-users. If a Satellite Server has not cached a piece of content or an essential pagelet relevant to a user request, it communicates with FatWire Content Server to obtain the necessary intelligence or data to serve that page. Dynamic pages can be assembled quickly out of cache and delivered to end-users. This allows Content Server to deliver tens-of-millions of dynamic, personalized pages per day at blazing speed.

Cache Static Pages
By storing frequently used content closer to the user and reducing the performance load on a site's primary infrastructure, caching also offers performance benefits for static content. Satellite Server can cache at the page level as well as the pagelet level so that content that doesn't change based on the user can be delivered very quickly and cost-effectively.

Ensure Most Recent Content is Delivered
Cached objects stored by Satellite Server are automatically updated and flushed, ensuring that the latest content is available in cache at all times. FatWire Content Server makes it possible to automatically update caches (both in Content Server and in remote Satellite Servers) after a publishing process. As new information is published to a mirrored installation, a tracking system on the target machine determines which pagelets have been changed, regenerates those pages, and subsequently flushes the existing cache. When the cache is full, Satellite Server retires old pages to make room for new ones. Satellite Server implements the Least Recently Used (LRU) algorithm to determine which items should be removed from the cache.

Bring Content to Customers
Because network congestion can cause a performance bottleneck, serving content from cache hosts located close to user access points can improve performance. Satellite Servers can be distributed to the edges of the network, closer to users requesting information. Distributing Satellite Servers in multiple geographic locations allows businesses to effectively reach global end users without duplicating core infrastructure. Bringing content closer to its consumers significantly reduces response times as well as the costs of maintaining an international infrastructure.

Improve Performance While Controlling Costs
With FatWire Satellite Server, customers can predictably scale sites to tens-of-millions of pages per day while reducing the cost of deploying highly dynamic sites. As many Satellite Servers as needed can be added to a Content Server implementation. Additional caching appliances can simply be added in front of the main to deal with huge swings in traffic related to specific content or an event. This makes planning for growth easy. Because Satellite Server runs on affordable hardware and relieves some of the pressure on a site's "head-end" infrastructure, it lowers a site's total cost of ownership.
